SMED: the (never ending) challenge to flexibility

Every manufacturing process has one main objective: to create a continuous flow pulled by the customer. As well known, on contrast, we witness to a well rooted bias: to replenish stock by producing batches of finished or semi-finished goods. One cause of this choice can be detected in the long stops of production due to machines set ups. Every lean transformation that does not succeed in reducing the time of change over, then, is weak and ineffective.
